Painter, author, pianist, composer, and hat connoisseur, Stephen Hough is the ultimate polymath. Acknowledged as one of the world’s most important pianists we are thrilled he’s returning to wells. Schumann and Beethoven will feature; we may also get his new virtuoso take on Mary Poppins heard in the 2024 Last Night of the Proms.
Stephen Hough
Award-winning classical pianist, recitalist and soloist who performs the standard repertoire with the world's leading orchestras as well as discovering and reviving unusual and neglected works. Stephen Hough is regarded as one of the most important pianists of his generation and is also an acclaimed composer. 'Mr Hough became the latest champion of the [Dvorak Piano Concerto with] crystalline, impeccably voiced playing... Brought an alluring warmth and lyricism to the slow movement' (New York Times) 'Schumann's Piano Concerto, with Stephen Hough as soloist... had been a performance of such startling freshness and clarity that one of the most familiar of all 19th-century piano concertos seemed totally re-imagined, with the CBSO as the perfect foil to Hough's cool brilliance' (The Guardian) 'The greatest living interpreter of the Rachmaninov concertos' (The Spectator) 'Pianist Stephen Hough provided the fireworks in the Liszt [1st concerto] a whiff of the demonic... a radiant, singing tone' (Washington Post).
