Almost a year to the day from a performance at the Wyvern Theatre of Messiaen’s iconic Quartet for the End of Time, three of the artists reunite to perform in the opening concert of Swindon Recital Series’ new season of professional chamber music events.
This time, though, Elizabeth Drew clarinet, Caroline Dale cello and Paul Turner piano will be playing music by Johannes Brahms. Written in 1891 when Brahms was in his late 50s and seemingly had retired from composition, he was introduced to a brilliant clarinettist who inspired him to write, amongst other pieces, a Clarinet Trio , the first three movements of which invoke a mood that is by and large languid but with occasional perturbations before waking everyone up with a short, energetic, gipsy-flavoured final movement. Five years earlier he had composed his second Cello sonata, described by Steven Isserlis as being ‘the work of an older man composing music with all the passion and sweep of youth.’
Paul Turner
Wiltshire-based classical pianist and chamber musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. 'Paul Turner was superlative in every way - wonderfully sensitive, with a very wide tonal palette' (Oxford Mail) 'For his part, Turner offered... intricate piano writing rendered with exemplary clarity and poise' (Richard Whitehouse) '... superbly partnered by Paul Turner's sensitive and alert accompaniments... that sixth sense of timing which is the true accompanist's particular gift' (Eastern Daily Press).
