About the show

Joel Sanders left a stand-up career in Las Vegas for life on a narrowboat.
18 years later, he’s still working out if it was the best decision he ever made.
This isn’t a cosy show about canal life.
It’s about what happens when you leave the life you’re supposed to have…
and try to build something else.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
Angry Boater is a unique blend of stand-up and storytelling — funny, honest and completely original.
Joel spent years performing across America, from redneck bars in the Deep South to theatres and casinos in Las Vegas, chasing a simple goal: to become the first British comedian to perform in all 50 states.
He made it to 40.
Then one night changed everything.
Nearly two decades later, still floating around the UK’s waterways, he has turned his experiences into a show that’s as unpredictable as the life behind it.
Expect sharp humour, unexpected turns, and stories that go far beyond canal life.
“Razor-sharp wit… masterful storytelling… completely original.”
As seen on Channel 4's Narrow Escapes.
Running time 130 (approx) including interval.

Angry Boater

"Sharp, funny and completely original" Join the charismatic star of Channel 4’s ‘Narrow Escapes’ for his flagship show about dropping out of society to become a nomad on the UK's waterways. Crisscrossing America, trying to become the first British comedian to perform in all 50 states, Joel spent a decade sharing the stage with his comedy heroes, including the late Robin Williams. But in 2008, a show in Tennessee went horribly wrong and, with 10 States remaining, Joel's American adventures came to an abrupt end. He returned to England, bought a canal boat and soon started creating 'Angry Boater.' 18 years on, approaching 60 and still floating around, Joel was discovered by Channel 4, becoming an instant hit on the award-nominated series, 'Narrow Escapes' which documented Joel's adventures including his narrowboat sea-voyage in the middle of the night. If you are boaty, or boat-curious or if you can’t imagine anything worse, expect a polished evening of comedy and stories unlike anything you’ll experience again. Along with the joys, perils and madness of a life afloat with hypertension, during the two hour show, Joel lifts the lid on several of his celebrity encounters (including chancing upon one of the biggest bands in the world and an awkward towpath encounter with a disgraced Hollywood A-Lister).
