Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Classical Symphony, Lyadov’s 8 Russian Folksongs

Musica Nova return to at All Saints' Church, Cheadle Hulme on Saturday 5th July 2025 at 7:30pm with a concert featuring both the Classical Symphony and Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev, along with Lyadov’s 8 Russian Folksongs.

Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf is a timeless symphonic fairy tale that delights audiences of all ages. With each character brought to life by a unique instrument—from the bold strings of Peter to the mischievous clarinet of the cat—this enchanting work is both a musical masterpiece and a captivating narrative adventure.

Musica Nova are delighted to welcome Robert Chasey as Narrator for Peter and the Wolf. Bob enjoyed 34 years as Principal Second Violin in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and was inspired to take up conducting by the great German conductor Rudolf Kempe, with whose credo he has tried to keep faith: 'Music must be understood; music must be learned but above all else, must be loved'.

Prokofiev’s Symphony No.1, known as the ‘Classical Symphony’ is a sparkling tribute to the past with a modern twist. Written in 1916-17, the symphony pays homage to the style of Haydn and Mozart. Light, lively, and full of charm, this symphony dances with grace and surprises at every turn.

In the 8 Russian Folk Songs Op.58, written in 1906, Lyadov transforms simple peasant tunes into miniature symphonic gems—each one a window into the joys, sorrows and spirit of rural life. From the wistful charm of lullabies to the lively pulse of village dances, these pieces capture the essence of a people and their land. Musica Nova will perform an arrangement for double wind quintet and double bass.
