Having played venues throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe, Joey The Lips return to The Gateway Theatre in February 2026 for a night of funk, blues, soul and motown. Following sell-out successes in Seaton for the past 4 years, Joey The Lips return bringing along their experience from TV chat shows to headlining to a 10,000+ audience at music festivals. The band continues to grow supporting some of the country's biggest music acts including Sam Ryder, Toploader & Stereo M/C's amongst others. Formed in 1993, the band has remained a dynamic 10-piece, consistently refreshed by new talent, including a new vocal line-up in 2018/19 and, more recently, powerhouse front woman Sami-Jane Slater. Early highlights include touring with soul legend Edwin Starr and releasing their debut album, Soul Fiction, in 1997. They've appeared on national BBC1 with Atomic Kitten and Martine McCutcheon for Children in Need, served as resident band on ITV's Langsford Late with Ruth Langsford, and collaborated on projects with soul icon Geno Washington. Other notable stage guests include Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) and saxophonist Snake Davis. The band has performed internationally, including appearances at the Guinness Jazz/Music Festival in Cork, Ireland.
Joey The Lips play a diverse brand of music billed as 'Funky Soul, Blues and Disco Revue' which belies their Commitments style soul band roots. From Gimme Some Lovin' to Beyonce's Crazy In Love, from Long Train Running to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, and their finale is a mad ten minute version of the B52's Love Shack with a heavy metal medley thrown in for good measure! Featuring three high quality vocalists, a driving rhythm section and a kicking horn section that won't stay still for a second. Vocalist Jimmy Alderson is the consummate frontman too, an expert both at working the crowd and at audience interaction. It's a winning formula and it's why the band is in great demand.
