Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began writing while practising medicine in Birmingham. Sax Rohmer, creator of Fu Manchu, was born there. Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow while living in the city, and Charles Dickens often performed at Birmingham Town Hall—including the first public reading of A Christmas Carol in 1853.
Jerome K. Jerome, author of Three Men in a Boat, hailed from nearby Walsall. Both he and Dickens excelled at tales of the macabre when the mood took them—and the spirits of these nineteenth-century greats live on in Don’t Go Into The Cellar!’s work.
