About the show

Award-winning, London-based hard bop quintet, Five-Way Split make their Lighthouse debut on the back of the release of their second album ‘Modus Operandi’.

Formed and crafted during weeks and months of rehearsal throughout the 2020 lockdown, the ‘Split mix sounds influenced by hard bop giants Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers with the modern day sound of New York supergroup One For All to create their own unique take on the genre. With their debut album shortlisted on several “best of” album lists, and nominated in ‘Best Ensemble’ category at the 2024 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, second album release ‘Modus Operandi’ has lived up to the high expectations around its release. Expect snappy, melodic and harmonically nuanced themes from the pen of pianist Rob Barron (Claire Martin), veteran trumpeter, Quentin Collins (Ronnie Scott’s club) and sax superpower Vasilis Xenopoulos (Nigel Price). As before, the horns are underpinned by the supertight rhythm section of bassist Matyas Hofecker & UK drum stalwart Matt Home.

It’s immediately clear upon first listening that this is a band who have covered the hard yards in the rehearsal studio, and their music will appeal to all fans of melodic, hard-swinging straight ahead Jazz. If you enjoyed the Jazz Defenders last year, this is another band you’ve got to check out!
