‘North Norfolk Bids Farewell to a Much Loved Blues and Americana Band’
A firm favourite of Cromer’s ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival for well over twenty years, the Spikedrivers are simply one of the most original, innovative and exciting Americana and rhythm and blues bands around.
Their combination of gutsy slide guitar, rock-solid bass, infectious grooves and highly distinctive vocals, creates a sound that is uniquely their own. They always take you on a journey, from southern juke-joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance.
The band features Ben Tyzack on guitars, vocals and harmonica, Constance Redgrave on bass guitar, vocals & percussion and Maurice McElroy on drums, vocals and also now Roger Nunn on percussion.
They have built quite a fan base in North Norfolk since they first appeared at the festival.
However, after a very successful and enjoyable twenty-five years, the band have decided to retire at the end of this year and this July will offer the last chance to catch them live locally when they appear at Northrepps Village Hall at a specially priced concert presented by Scott Butler, producer of ‘Folk on the Pier’.
Spikedrivers
Spikedrivers are one of the most original, innovative and exciting bands on the live music circuit. The bluesy combination of Ben Tyzack's sublime slide guitar, Constance Redgrave's deceptively simple bass lines, Maurice McElroy's precise drumming and percussion, along with their distinctive vocals and harmonies, creates a sound that is familiar yet different to anything you've ever heard before. Their roots are firmly in the Mississippi Delta, but their songwriting and arranging talents bring them right up to date. Their music has been described as 'haunting', 'gutsy', 'tribal' and even ‘psychedelic’. Spikedrivers are the new sound of transatlantic blues.
