Acclaimed American drummer Jeff Williams, a London resident for two decades until recently, returns to the Vortex with his first project as a leader in the UK since moving abroad. He will be joined by a newly formed quartet featuring his former student, emerging saxophonist Charlie Rees, plus award-winning German bassist Niklas Lukassen and renowned Russian pianist Regina Litvinova.

Performing together as a quartet for the first time, they will play the music of John Coltrane – an early salute to the legendary saxophonist’s centenary (23 September 2026 would have been his 100th birthday).

Jeff Williams

Dividing his time between Brooklyn and London, veteran American drummer Jeff Williams, has a rare rhythmic and sonic control that coaxes intelligent, colourful interplay from his colleagues. An ability that has served him well while performing and recording with the greats such as Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Lovano, Stan Getz, and John Abercrombie.

After his return from New York, he is today living between London and Berlin, from where he establishes himself as a resilient presence within the young European jazz scene. He magnetizes as a distinct rising voice that's sought after in manifold musical situations. Moreover, his sound and artistic vision radiate enormous band leader potential.
