Having been making music together in various forms for around 20 years, James and Misha have finally recorded their long-awaited trumpet-and-bass duo project, and for one night only they are launching their album “Moon Beans” here at the Vortex, due to be released on vinyl and digitally on 9th January 2026.

James Davison

Winner of the Smith-Watkins Trumpet Award (2016) at the Royal Academy of Music, James was lead trumpet with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and his CV includes work with the likes of the BBC Big Band, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and Pete Long’s ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’ band. He has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and as guest Principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra as well as his own band, co-led with Callum Au, playing the music of Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer.

Misha Mullov-Abbado

Misha Mullov-Abbado appearing at this event

Misha Mullov-Abbado is a musician who combines great imagination, raw talent tempered by a clear vision, and a colourful character. Son of the Italian conductor Claudio Abbado and Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova, Misha showed early musical promise but was keen to follow his own path and became intent on developing a career in jazz. Following a series of prizes, including the prestigious Kenny Wheeler Music Prize, he released his debut album New Ansonia on Edition Records.
