Following Hurricane Melissa which hit the coast of Jamaica on the 28th October this year, affecting 1.9 million residents and devastating countless families and their homes, the Vortex Jazz Club will be hosting a concert on the 23rd December raising funds for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent appeal.

Join us for an incredible night of music and improvisation celebrating Jamaican music - with the line-up consisting of Orphy Robinson, Cleveland Watkiss, Leon Foster Thomas, Gary Crosby, Seb Rochford and many more still to be announced.

Cleveland Watkiss

Co-founder of the Jazz Warriors, Cleveland is Britain’s leading jazz vocalist (winner of Wire / The Guardian best Jazz vocalist for three consecutive years). He combines samplers, digital technology and the human voice to create mind blowing orchestral soundscapes. Switching effortlessly from lead/lyrics to bass lines, falsetto scats to human beat box, Watkiss’ breathtaking vocal range moves seamlessly between musical cultures.

Leon Foster Thomas

Leon’s deft and ambitious command of the steel pan has transcended the instrument’s novel stereotype to be featured at world stages such as New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts (Miami), Moscow International House of Music, Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Perm International Jazz Festival (Russia), Miami Downtown Jazz Festival, and International Festival of Contemporary Culture (Kazakhstan). Foster-Thomas has also worked with artists such as: Hugh Masekela, Randy Brecker, John Daversa, Sammy Figueroa, Vince Mendoza, Richard Smallwood, Ky-Mani Marley, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, Dolly Parton, Igor Butman, John Beasley, and many more.
