Kotoa

Brighton band Kotoa bring a fresh, forward-thinking sound that blends political consciousness with soulful melodies, heavy basslines and deep rhythmic grooves. Drawing influence from dub, trip-hop and the new wave of African-inspired jazz, the band are fast becoming a standout force in Brixton’s historic music scene. Formed by drummer Laurie Campling, bassist Frank Black, keyboardist Sam Hillier, guitarist/vocalist Memphis Koloi, and saxophonist/vocalist Maia Avery, Kotoa have already gained serious attention following the success of singles Higher Being and I Am, alongside their striking rework of Fela Kuti’s Zombie. The track received support from Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6 Music and Worldwide FM, marking the band as ones to watch.
