John Law (“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” International Piano Magazine, 2014) presents Re-Creations: creative arrangements of some of the world’s most familiar music.
The idea is simple:we take some of the best-known tunes from all genres - jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes - and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them. Sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back.
John Law
John Law, a prize-winning classical prodigy on piano, is one of Europe’s finest jazz pianist/composers, having played at many festivals worldwide and recorded over forty albums, working with musicians as diverse as Gwilym Simcock, Andy Sheppard, Jason Rebello, Tim Garland, Iain Ballamy and Evan Parker. John’s main projects currently are his acclaimed contemporary jazz and electronics quartet Congregation featuring Mercury Prize nominee James Mainwaring, Re-Creations – a quartet featuring Parliamentary Jazz Award winner Sam Crockatt, playing new arrangements of jazz and pop tunes - and two classical crossover projects: Goldberg, his recreation, with added visuals, of Bach’s original work and, with pianist David Gordon, Sacre, presenting Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, alongside jazz interpretations of some of the movements. "...combining the vocabularies of jazz and classical in a singular and seamless way, coalescing improvisational surprise and a deep elegiac musicality..." All About Jazz 2011 "...so full of joy that it can renew your faith not just in jazz, but music itself." Phil Johnson, Independent on Sunday 2011 “An interesting and highly gifted maverick musician” Alfred Brendel “One of this country’s most imaginative young pianists” The Times “When he records for ECM he'll become a star” Jazzthethik, Germany “...technical bravura with crystal clear, fast passagework coupled with a sovereign command over everything that is pianistically possible. You wonder if there is actually anything that this pianist cannot do.” Jazz Podium Germany 1997
