K'ala Marka

K’ala Marka are one of Bolivia’s most popular traditional bands. The name means “City of Stone” in Aymara. Hugo Gutiérrez y Rodolfo Choque joined forces in La Paz in 1984, and have been exploring and pushing the boundaries of traditional music ever since. Using mountain rhythms and instruments like the panpipes, their new sounds, new poetry, new effects, and a new musical personality has established the group as one of the most important Latin American groups in recent years. K'ala Marka's new contributions to the musical evolution of its indigenous characteristic is pointed to the preservation of nature which has allowed them to enter and maintain a major success in different countries around Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. The group has become one of the largest Latin American group of artistic achievement with a continued involvement in important festivals, venues and media - representing their ancestral music.
