Johnny Campbell emerged onto the UK folk scene writing self-penned material and delving deep into Northern English folk song and story.
Johnny Campbell is passionate about the songs and stories of northern England. Taking inspiration from traditional material, as well as penning new songs of his own, he explores what it means to be human today, as well as looking back at our history.
Campbell's first album, From Hull & Halifax & Hell, took him even further north than you might expect, as he headed to the Faroe Islands to record it live on the island of Nolsoy. This was followed by three singles - Hard Times of Old England, Winter Hill Trespass and A Right to Roam, the latter of which was chosen by Tradfolk as one of the best folk songs of 2022.
Johnny Campbell
Johnny has been singing and performing for years with Punk bands in his younger days to performing with Three Sheets T' Wind across the UK and Netherlands who've been billed with such acts as Levellers, Billy Bragg, Ash, Becky Unthank, Chumbawamba and many more. He's also a multi-instumentalist, versatile on Guitar, Tin Whistle, Mandolin, Tenor Banjo, Fiddle, and is working on Concertina, Ukulele and more. Johnny is a solo artist performing new, old and traditional material from a wide repertoire, mostly original. Whether it's performing an original song in the style of the Sean-Nos, singing a Norwegian ballad or thrashing a lesser heard traditional number in a breakneck bluegrass-punk manner, Johnny Campbell can sometimes raise a few eyebrows but more that certainly entertain. For better or worse!
