Join award-winning jazz vocalist Louise Balkwill for an evening of hidden gems from The Great American Songbook, original vocalese and burning scat. The 2022 winner of the Riga Jazz Stage international jazz voice competition, Louise has been hailed as one of the UK’s finest vocal improvisers and storytellers, with fans including jazz cream-of-the-crop Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Claire Martin and Leroy Jones. Most recently, she's been appearing with celebrated vocal harmony trio The Puppini Sisters, and was also featured with Adrian Cox at our annual Jazz on the Lawn show last summer (where she was absolutely sensational)! Along with her band featuring Rob Barron-piano Louise will be performing songs from the Great American Songbook featured in her debut album “First Class”. And watch out for her Special Guest Jonathan Bauer on vocals and trumpet.
"Totally bowled over by Louise Balkwill’s incredible vocals and engaging stage presence" Jazzwise; "a singer to listen out for" Liane Carroll; “A true new talent, shining right here…” Ian Shaw
Louise Balkwill
An impressive and talented young singer, in 2012 Louise won a scholarship to Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she developed her skills under the tutelage of the likes of Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Anita Wardell, Tina May, Simon Purcell and Barry Harris. Her love for the American Songbook combined with an impressive technique and ability to “swing” have seen her already perform at many of the capitals foremost venues, including Pizza Express Dean Street, Ronnie Scott's, The Archduke, Charlie Wright's and Oliver's Jazz Bar. Louise has also become known as an acclaimed authority on New Orleans music, and directs The Old Jelly Rollers, a New Orleans style second line band, founded in 2016.
