Take a walk down the red carpet as de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra delivers a blockbuster repertoire in one of our most popular concerts of the season!
Join us for a journey through music from the silver screen this May. We start with some wonderful pieces of classical music used in films and TV adverts, from The Ride of the Walkyries, used in Apocalypse Now, to Force of Destiny (Overture), from the Stella Artois advert, and the Onedin Line Theme from Khatchaturian’s Adagio from Spartacus. The Big Country and Born Free are two of the most instantly recognisable film themes from the 1960s and close our first half.
In the second half, we’ll delve into the contemporary film world with the golden era of modern movie scores from giants such as Michael Giacchino, John Williams and Hans Zimmer.
In addition to these well-known film favourites, the concert will feature the debut performance of an original composition by a music student from the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire.
Yangfan Zhang is a final year Chinese International student studying BSc (Hons) Music Composition and Technology for Film and Games. His piece, Lotus Flower, was selected by the orchestra for its cinematic qualities and the interesting use of pentatonic scales, which give it an Eastern energy.
