What do a British Chinese woman and an American expat have in common? More than you might think! In Asian American: Cultural Confusion, Shuang Teng and Rabiah Coon team up for a hilarious split-bill show that dives into the awkward, surprising, and sometimes absurd realities of life in the UK. Shuang moved to the UK as a child from China, bringing with her a rich heritage that sometimes clashes with her British identity. Rabiah landed on these shores as an adult, bringing her American upbringing along for the ride. Together, they explore everything from the joys of British small talk to the complexities of explaining their families' traditions to confused Brits. An earlier version of the show was performed at the Camden Fringe in 2022 and the Leicester Comedy Festival in 2023.
Born in China and dropped into the middle of the UK at the age of 9, Shuang is a British Chinese Londoner who enjoys the benefits of growing up with two different cultures. The show explores her attempts at navigating new living situations, learning about cheese and ham sandwiches (sandwiches sounded a lot more exotic before she saw one), trying to fit in with the blonde girls in school and what it’s like to wish that one day, she will also blossom into a beautiful blonde girl named Emma or Hannah.
