Winner of the 2023 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, N’Famady Kouyaté is a balafon virtuoso from Guinea, now based in Cardiff. Blending traditional Mandingue music with jazz, funk, indie, and pop, his music is a vibrant, high-energy fusion that has wowed crowds at festivals from Green Man to SXSW.
Whether performing solo or with a full band, N’Famady delivers an exhilarating live show packed with rhythm, joy, and dazzling musicianship. His debut EP—recorded at Rockfield Studios—featured collaborations with Gruff Rhys, Lisa Jên Brown, and Kliph Scurlock. With his debut album due in late 2024, this rising star is just getting started.
Support comes from Mari Mathias, a Pembrokeshire-born artist whose mystical alt-folk sound is rooted in Welsh myth and memory. Her 2022 debut Annwn draws on family archive tapes to explore identity and the spirit of place, blending traditional influences with bold, contemporary vision.
N'famady Kouyaté
N’famady Kouyaté is a young energetic master musician from Guinea (Conakry), who relocated to Cardiff (Wales) in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist who wowed audiences across the UK and Ireland during autumn/winter 2019/20 with his modern interpretations of traditional West African Mandingue songs and rhythms supporting Gruff Rhys on the Pang! album tour. N’famady’s primary instrument is the balafon – the traditional wooden xylophone, sacred to West African culture and his family heritage of the griot/djeli. In Guinea he founded ‘Les Héritiers du Mandingue’ a tradi-modern group that toured extensively in West Africa.
