About the show
Winterbourne Medieval Barn is a unique surviving example of a great medieval Barn built by a gentry family. Constructed using green timber methods, cutting edge technology of the time, it is a magnificent example of the builders' craft. Come and find out about its history and admire its original medieval timbers. In this illustrated talk, hear about the turbulent 1300s when the Barn was built, and about how this historic site was almost lost in the 1980s, then saved by local supporters.
The Barn was built for Thomas De Bradeston, an influential medieval knight who fought at the famous battle of Crecy and had close links to Berkeley Castle and the kings Edward II and Edward III. Community Events Coordinator, Ceara, will tell the story of Sir Thomas, looking at his links with neighbouring St. Michael's Church as well as the Barn, and pointing out interesting features in the barn. There will be time for questions with Barn volunteers afterwards.
There will be an opportunity to see a piece of the original 14th century wooden truss at close quarters, which has just been removed as part of recent repair work. After the talk you will visit 12th C St Michael's church nextdoor to see some of the amazing features there which link with the Barn.
The talk starts at 7pm. Barn and bar open from 6.30pm. Seating is unreserved. Free parking on site. Tickets £7.50 Book direct on Ticketsource or via the Barn website.
