A double bill of talks by local historians and archaeologists, Sally Gallia and Neil Baker, about the life and times of Sir Thomas de Bradeston, who was Lord of the Manor of Winterbourne from 1328 - 1360 and had Winterbourne Medieval Barn built in 1342. He
rose to prominence in the courts of both Edward II and Edward III, being knighted by the former and then becoming so close to the latter that the King called him his 'beloved valet' who stayed by his side continuously. Sir Thomas founded a chantry chapel at Breadstone near Berkeley, where he had been born and where his first wife Isabel was laid to rest, and where it seems he may have been buried himself. The chantry disappeared without trace after the Reformation, but the search for it continues.
Historian Sally Gallia gives the first talk, about Sir Thomas himself, and archaeologist Neil Baker gives the second talk about the history of the chantry chapel and the work being done by to rediscover it.
The talks start at 7pm in the magnificent Medieval Barn. Seating is unreserved and the doors and bar open from 6.30pm. Each talk will be around 45 minutes each, with time for questions. There will be a short break in-between the talks when refreshments will again be available.
Book online on Ticketsource or via the Barn website. Free parking on site.
The talks will also be available live-streamed on zoom.
