It is hard to imagine a richer quartet programme. Haydn’s great ‘Sunrise’ quartet is coupled with the unashamed Bohemian romanticism of Smetana’s From my Life. Beethoven’s Op 131 quartet has long been regarded as one of the great musical and emotional journeys. Schumann said of Beethoven’s late quartets ‘They seem to me to stand . . .on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination.’
